Introduction to biochar – application for soil improvement in Eco-Fair project
The project “Promotion of supply and demand of Eco-Fair Agri-food processing products in Vietnam (Eco-Fair)” aims at improving the capacity of micro, small and medium-sized enterprises (MSMEs) to implement sustainable production and product innovation practices in the agro-processing product supply chain. Participating enterprises will be supported through consultation on zero waste organic farming practices; innovation in drying and heating technology during product processing; product innovation towards cleaner and more sustainable production.
One of the effective applications among zero-waste organic farming practices is soil improvement using Bio-char, generated from the Volumetric Continuous Biomass Gasification (VCBG) technology. This is a high quality biochar produced by the Center for Creativity and Sustainability Study and Consultancy (CCS).
Biochar is produced from any plant – based material (e.g. twigs, husks, straw…) with high carbon content, generated from the biomass pyrolysis, at temperatures ranging between 450 and 8000C in the absence of oxygen. Magnetic biochar is highly effective in retaining water, absorbing heavy metals, herbicides, etc., and its ability to store carbon in the soil, contributing to reducing greenhouse gases. In cultivation, biochar produced from biomass gasification furnaces will be composted with manure, other organic fertilizers or even inorganic fertilizers to make fertilizers for plants. A large amount of biochar generated from the VCBG process will be utilized to improve the soil for sustainable agricultural production.
